A COMPLETE HISTORY The What's Up Lounge, a staple of live music in Mankato for more than three decades, has consistently provided a welcoming stage to musicians from across the country, and around the world. It's stage has been paraded upon by a diverse range of performers, such as House of Large Sizes, American Head Charge, Diskord, Murphys Law, Motion City Soundtrack, Lucky Boys Confusion, Wookiefoot, The Big Wu, hometown faves The Libido boyz, and even Wesley Willis! It all started years ago with the vision of a small club (interesting fact: the first band to grace the stage was Dead Flowers-a cover band, which has been a rarity in the club's history), that could provide a community of musicians with a place to perform. It took some time, but as the first local acts began to play shows at the club, its popularity increased and people started to see what the What's Up Lounge had to offer. The beer was cheap, the specials were good, and most of all, you didn’t have to watch another cover band butcher your favorite tunes. It was local musicians performing original music and sharing it with their friends. The What's Up's popularity continued to grow as it stayed true to it's roots. Independent performers began to take notice of its no Ticketmaster/Clear Channel, DIY mentality, and started booking stops on their tour at the club. As the years have passed the community at the What’s Up Lounge has grown to unprecedented proportions. The club is also taking steps to ensure it’s future by providing a place where kids of all ages can perform, and watch musicians from around the country. The What’s Up Lounge is the primary venue for original music in town, and with some hard work and a little luck, you could be playing with your favorite bands this year! We've made several big changes in the last year, including: all new sound equipment, a new look to the whole club, the stage has been rebuilt, new soundstaff, the carpet has been recently cleaned, and in general, a much more inviting atmosphere than ever before. A special thanks to all the townie regulars, past and present, who have kept this place alive (you know who you are and we love you).
