BOOKING POLICY (Some of this is excerpted from Steve @ The Warehouse in LaCrosse--you should drive to shows there as well--it's really not that far!!) The What's Up Lounge books many performers, local and national, and have a variety of musical genres represented within it's doors. We at the What's Up Lounge are always willing to give any local bands a chance to play on an appropriate show. If you are in a band from within 35-40 miles of Mankato, just email booking@whatsuplounge.com. We'll do everything possible to get you a gig. It would be best if you have looked at the calendar and have some ideas which show your band might be appropriate to play on. We highly encourage local bands to play only one show a month. If you choose for that show to be at the What's Up Lounge, thats great. The bands that play here write their own material, and are career-minded. We're not about booking the bands that play every week in every bar in town, so they can keep up their free beer addiction. Yes we serve alcohol at 21+ shows, but it helps us keep our doors open so we can keep trying to bring bands to Mankato that otherwise wouldn't swing through! No local band needs to be playing every week, you'll burn out your friends and your fans. This is to extend the life of your band, and your future drawing potential. You are no good to us if you can't draw anyone, and you are no good to yourself either. Thats the reality. Look at the big picture. The What's Up Lounge has always allowed local bands to share the actual stage with national recording artists. We try and do this as much as possible. This is the way to build up your resume' and interact with artists that you may learn from. In return, we expect you to act responsibly towards the local music scene. If any of you want to discuss this, send us an email. We've been around for a while and know how this biz works, and our goal is to maintain the integrity of the scene, and that is only possible with strong local bands who also share an interest in maintaining the longetivity of their bands by strategically planning shows. Just one more tip to local bands: Supporting the scene also means coming out to shows at the club when you're not playing. Not only does that support the scene, but you can learn something from every musician you hear, every band you watch, every show you're at. You learn what TO do, what NOT to do. You see what works and what doesn't, AND you help keep the venue where you play open. YOUR fans also have the opportunity to interact with you when they see you out appreciating other bands and supporting the local scene. It never fails to amaze us how many opportunities local bands miss to meet and befriend touring musicians, to pass along a demo CDs, etc. Just because we didn't book your band to open for your favorite band is no reason to NOT come see that favorite band. In fact, it proves what type of person you are, and will probably be reflected in your future bookings, if any. When you have the opportunity to come out and see bands who have record deals performing in our little club, and you can actually talk with these bands and befriend them, you should DO IT. Meet them, give them a demo, exchange contact info, and start networking. Getting on the road is what you want to do... right? THATS the way to do it. Not by playing at the local bar who will probably only do original music for a couple of months then realize it's a little harder than it looks. Don't damage the financial stability of your most important performance venue. Support the scene that supports YOU |
